The Prairie: A Tale. 479 pp. Each volume contains a steel engraved frontispiece and vignette titles plus numerous illustrations in text by Felix Darley, who was known as "perhaps the best of Dickens.' This is, of course, the first American illustrated novels of J. F. Cooper. Original brown cloth, with gilt decoration on front cover and gilt spine, a few volumes with minor corner rubbing, volume #12 with slight damp staining up to page 70 as shown in one of the pictures below. Volume #31 with mainly marginal damp staining up to page 30 or so, as shown in one of the pictures below. 2 volumes show slight affect of dampness on covers. Generally an excellent copy, bright and tight. A nice Civil War-era set. Plus: Lounsbury, Thomas R. JAMES FENIMORE COOPER. First Edition. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company (The Riverside Press, Cambridge), 1882, (8) + 306 pp, 8vo. (Published in the series: AMERICAN MEN OF LETTERS). Illustrated with a frontispiece of James Fenimore Cooper. Original maroon binding, gilt lettering on spine, slight edge wear, otherwise an excellent copy. Cooper was born in Cooperstown, NY, where his father had come shortly after the Revolutionary War from Burlington, NJ. His father had come into vast tracts of land in NY along the head-waters of the Susquehanna.
