Description
Offered here is an extremely rare pamphlet entitled:  A Dissertation Concerning the most Venerable Name of JEHOVAH, by Samuel Mather, M.A. Pastor of a Church in Boston, New England, published by the noted Colonial Printers Edes and Gill (Boston) in 1760, 1st edition, 8 3/4 x 5 1/2; 101pp.  SAMUEL MATHER (1706-85) was the son of the famed Cotton Mather (and grandson of Increase Mather).  Samuel graduated from Harvard in 1723.  He became pastor of the North Church in Boston in 1732 and continued there until 1742.  He was subsequently pastor of a church on North Bennett Street.  Among his writings are The Life of Cotton Mather (1729) and America Known to the Ancients (1773).  In his preface to Dissertation, Mather claims that this work to promote knowledge of the Divine Name is the first such published in New-England.  Titlepage has ragged edges (chipping/ minor insect damage-- affecting several words) and ink signatures (John and Miss Julia Goddard), some internal edgewear, a couple tears, some pencil marks internally (brackets of passages), toning, original string tie-- overall quite good considering age.  Will ship priority mail only.
