Burton     A Scarce Eastern Hemisphere Map – Ancient Geography Map Title: Carta Universal de Ptolomeo. [Ptoleme's World Map] Printed: Madrid, 1772 A charming world hemisphere map showing the East in an ancient interpretation, according to Ptoleme, with the westernmost extremity of Africa separated by water and Madagascar labeled ‘Menuthias Island’. An area roughly encompassing the Sinai Peninsula and northwest Arabia is shown virtually as an island. The northern coast of Australia is vaguely indicated, as is the Kamchatka Peninsula. This is an original antique engraved map from a historic eighteenth century work by the venerated Noël Antoine Pluche. Map text is in Spanish. A remarkable early engraving with strong impression, in very good condition, suitable for framing. A delightful example of early printing. Sheet measures approximately 7.5 inches x 11.5 inches or 19 cm x 29.5 cm. Image measures approximately 5.25 inches x 7.25 inches or 14 cm x 18.5 cm. Noël-Antoine Pluche, (1686-1761), known as the abbé Pluche, was a French priest and teacher, most famous for his nine volume work 'Spectacle de la nature' or 'Nature Display'd', which was a popular and comprehensive encyclopedic work translated into several languages throughout Europe, and which influenced many to become naturalists. Pluche presented a lucid description of natural history, the cosmos, the human body, and human society, also including foremost descriptions and sketch illustrations of machinery, which prefigure those of the 'Encyclopédie'. This is an original leaf from the Spanish edition published in Madrid by La Imprenta de Pedro Marin, in 1772, titled "Espectaculo De La Naturaleza, O Conversaciones Acerca De Las Particularidades De La Historia Natural, Que Han Parecido Mas a Proposito Para Excitar Una Curiofidad Util, Y Formarles La Razon a Los Jovenes Lectores", volume 8.
