Burton     A Scarce Eighteenth Century Celestial Map – In Two Sheets Map Title: Primera Parte del Emispherio Celeste Septentrional. Segunda Parte del Emispherio Celeste Septentrional. Printed: Madrid, 1772 An intricately detailed map of the Northern Celestial Hemisphere, in 2 sheets. Zodiac signs are ornately sketched to illustrate the constellations of ancient Greek tradition, passed down through the Middle Ages, and still used in modern astrology. Also showing the great circle of the ecliptic in the Arctic circle. This is an original antique engraved map from a historic eighteenth century work by the venerated Noël Antoine Pluche in two sheets. Map text is in Spanish. A remarkable early engraving with strong impression, in very good condition, suitable for framing. A delightful example of early printing. Each sheet measures approximately 7.5 inches x 12.25 inches or 19 cm x 31 cm. Image for each sheet measures approximately 5.5 inches x 11.25 inches or 14 cm x 28.5 cm. Numerous traditions and applications employing astrological concepts have arisen since its earliest recorded beginnings in the 3rd millennium BC. It has played a role in the shaping of culture, early astronomy, and other disciplines throughout history. Astrology and astronomy were often indistinguishable before the modern era, with the desire for predictive and divinatory knowledge one of the primary motivating factors for astronomical observation. Astronomy began to diverge from astrology after a period of gradual separation from the Renaissance up until the 18th century. Noël-Antoine Pluche, (1686-1761), known as the abbé Pluche, was a French priest and teacher, most famous for his nine volume work 'Spectacle de la nature' or 'Nature Display'd', which was a popular and comprehensive encyclopedic work translated into several languages throughout Europe, and which influenced many to become naturalists. Pluche presented a lucid description of natural history, the cosmos, the human body, and human society, also including foremost descriptions and sketch illustrations of machinery, which prefigure those of the 'Encyclopédie'. This is an original leaf from the Spanish edition published in Madrid by La Imprenta de Pedro Marin, in 1772, titled "Espectaculo De La Naturaleza, O Conversaciones Acerca De Las Particularidades De La Historia Natural, Que Han Parecido Mas a Proposito Para Excitar Una Curiofidad Util, Y Formarles La Razon a Los Jovenes Lectores", volume 8.
