The father worked in London from about 1714 onwards and produced some of the best and most attractive maps of the 18th century. However, he died in poverty and his son carried on the business and suffered the same fate. This excellent copperplate map was the work of the younger Bowen and was published in 1774. The map shows South America and parts of North America, Europe and Africa. Of particular note, however, is that the map shows the tracks of Drake, Byron, Carteret, Wallis, Bougainville and Cook. These were notable navigators who rounded Cape Horn and explored the Pacific Ocean. The map is in good condition, has later full wash hand coloring and is printed on heavy paper with a number of folds. Some of the folds are reinforced on the back of the map. Bowen's name is inscribed at bottom right. The map measures 8.25 X 10.0 inches (21.0 X 25.5 cm.) with margins = or > 0.375 inch (1 cm.)
