Description
THE ANNUAL REGISTEROr a View of the History, Politics and Literature, For the Year 1775. First Edition, 1776. The affair at Lexington (though some such event must have been long foreseen and expected) excited the greatest indignation in the other colonies, and they prepared for war with as much eagerness and dispatch as if an enemy had already appeared at each of their doors. The bravery shewn by the militia in this their first essay, and the supposed advantages they had obtained over the regulars, were matters of great exultation; while those who fell in action were regretted with the deepest concern, and honoured, not only as patriots, but as martyrs, who had died bravely in the cause of their country.... London: J. Dodsley, 1776. Rare first edition of this remarkable register founded, and quite judiciously written, by Edmund Burke. This volume was printed during the American Revolution, with breaking news of the fighting between the British troops and the American colonists. Also, in the Natural History portion, there are letters from Benjamin Franklin regarding scientific experiments (from the Philosophical Transactions). Many significant American documents in the State Papers section. 5.5 x 8 inches. Both boards detached, spine cracked. Sticker on spine. Early bookplate of “S. Hutchinson.” Bit toned within else quite neat and clean internally. George Washington, Colonies, Bunker’s Hill, Lexington, Boston, Salem, Congress, Philadelphia, Declaration of Rights, General Gage, Millitia, Continental Congress, &c. &c. A rare and quite extraordinary volume. Please note that I have a other historic Americana posted at this time with more to come quite soon. ********** Sales tax for Vermont buyers.
