Cook 1769 Robert Benard was a French cartographer and engraver whose earliest work was for the Abbe Prevost's 'Histoire Generale des Voyages'. His best-known maps come from the French edition of Captain James Cook's three voyages and this map, titled 'Carte de l'Isle de Taiti, par le Lieutenant J. Cook', is one of them. The map shows the island of Tahiti: 'Otaheite Neu' and the pennisula of 'Otaheite Ete', and the island of 'Eimeo', present day Moorea. The map has attractive detail to the landscape, depth soundings, and point of anchorage. The engraving measures 9" by 16" with three folds (as issued), and is in good condition.
