Description
A two piece, handled, sterling silver w/lemon wash inside, Trophy Cup, measuring 187mm / 7-1/4" high; 165mm / 6-1/2" wide; and weighing 400 grams / 14 0z +/-. Inside the base there are four inscriptions at the compass points reading - "CRICHTON BROS"; "STERLING"; "NEW YORK"; "715A" (the "5" is subscript and could be a triangle). Inside of the rim of the lid is an inscription in beautiful Old English Script reading " Won at the Royal Cock Pit Westminster in a Welch Main fought April 4th 1783 George Onstow Esq. Steward ". The base and lid decoration features combinations of vines, leaves, etc., en repousse, and there are several small easily repairable "dings" on both the base and lid.The American Society of Appraisers appraisal dated May 10, 2008, reads: " Your sterling silver trophy was made by Crichton Brothers (Lionel Alfred Crichton), Crichton and Co. of London and New York, as stated in the photo. The Royal Cock Pit in Westminster in the Welch Main was named the Cockpit-in-Court and was an early theater in London, now the site of 70 Whitehall in Westminster, and was an area of staging cockfighting. Your two-piece trophy with handles has a "lemon wash", a gold wash to cover the silver. Crichton and Co. was in business from 1897 to 1954 and made the finest silver, i.e. bowls, pitchers, flatware and baskets. CRICHTON AND CO. WAS KNOWN FOR MAKING REPRODUCTIONS AND THIS IS WHAT YOUR TROPHY IS. ** I would date the sterling silver trophy from 1900 - 1920. As of May 9, 2008, silver was selling for $16.48 an ounce. With the beautiful workmanship that Crichton and Co. produced I would put a value of $1,500.00 in the retail market. ". Further research has found that a "Welch Main" may also refer to a thirty-two bird "round robin" cockfight with the last standing bird the winner. ** Boldface type and capitals added.
