Description
1798 LA PEROUSE- "Plan of Part of the Island of Maouna" on a sheet with "Plan of the Creek du Massacre" This item is from the 1798 English octavo edition of "A Voyage Around the World in the Years 1785,1786, 1787 and 1788". This is from the 1st English published in London by J. Johnson. The dimensions are 7 by 4 Inches ( 18 x 10 cm) BW copperplate engraving in VG condition. La Perouse vanished in the course of the voyage and the remains of his ships were not found until some years later at the island of Vanikoro. Several expeditions where sent to search for the Astrolabe and Boussle, but they were unsuccessful (in 1826, the first proof of the fate of the voyage was determined, but it was not until 1964 that the ship’s wreckage was actually discovered). All was occurring at a time of great upheaval in France. It is reported that the voyage was so important that on the eve of his execution. King Louis asked if there was any news from M. La Perouse. So, if he was lost at sea, how do we have an account of his voyages? La Perouse sent home an interim report of the voyage from a port in Kamchatka (a story in itself) and another via HMS Sirius from Botany Bay, New Holland (Australia) and a third from Manila. The island of Maouna is now called Tutuila and is the main island of American Samoa and the third largest of the Samoan island chain. The upper map shows the immediate vicinity of Massacre Bay and includes a "fresh water creek", Assassins Bay (Aasu Bay) and notations of coral reefs. Very nice topographic detail. The lower map is a detailed view of Massacre bay with an index showing the Ships’ and boats’ position at the time of the native attack. On the shoreline are two villages and a creek flowing between them. The attack occurred during an attempt by the French to re-provision fresh water. In the course of gathering up the barrels, it was said that a stone was thrown and mayhem ensued, leaving21 French and three times that number Samoans dead. To his credit La Perouse did not undertake the revenge that was so common among the European explorers. (even Cook) Terms : Shipping via USPS 1st Class in USA.
