Please bookmark our "sellers list" and return for single and bulk lots of collectibles, antiques, tools, and art. Description: From a Texas Collector, we are offering this portable diptych sundial.  It consists of three marked and calibrated ivory flat faces, joined by a hinge and suitable for a pocket. A gnomon was a string between the two faces and would be easily replaced to make this a working sundial watch.... When the string is tight, then the two faces form both a vertical and horizontal sundial. The best gnomons was black braided silk, linen or hemp in the 16th & 17th Century. This piece has a laminated piece of wood between two pieces of ivory providing the depth required for inserting the compass. "With a knot or bead on the string as a nodus, and the correct markings, a diptych can keep a calendar well-enough to plant crops." While researching this item for posting I found many variations and uses for this instrument. A diptych can also act as a compass and even measure latitude. Also used for resetting early clocks. Larger (meter-sized) models might have been used for navigation in ancient times. This item is being sold as-is, as found condition. Please examine the pictures above by clicking on the images you will see a larger version to help determine the overall condition. ANY additional information by anyone on this item would be welcomed and appreciated. Condition: Very Good condition for it's age. Measurements: Length is 1 & 5/8 inches by width of 1 & 1/16 inches. It measures 1/4 inch thick and has a 13/16 inch diameter compass. When open the height measures 1 & 3/4 inches...
