1803 First John Adams Holy Bible   Title: 1803 Holy Bible Edition: First John Adams Bible Publisher: Printed by John Adams and William Hancock, for Mathew Carey, Philadelphia Condition: Overall good and intact with all engravings present.  General title detached but present.  Wrinkled/torn at edges, as is frontispiece map.  Map itself is generally unaffected, except some wrinkles and one tear over a rather blank portion of the map.  Large portions of blank endpaper wrinkled and bent.  OT and NT titles present as well.  Engravings counted and present.  Plate 15 torn at corner, affecting engraving slightly.  Last few pages have some holes/tears at margins.  Pages foxed and moderately browned but readable. Binding: Bound in full-leather with raised spine.  Scuffed at edges and joints.  Spine moderately crackled.  Description: General title reads, "The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments: Together with the Apocrypha: Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, By the Special Command of King James I of England.  With Marginal Notes and References.  To which are added, an index; an alphabetical table of all the names in the Old and New Testaments, with their significations; tables of Scripture weights, measures, and coins; John Brown's Concordance, &c. &c. &c.  Embellished with ten maps, and twenty historical engravings."  The publication date is actually November 7th, 1803.  Verso of OT title has The Names and Order of all the Books of the Old and New Testaments, with the number of their chapters.  Index to the various articles annexed to this edition of the Bible, and list of maps and historical engravings.  Errata pasted to last page.  NT title present and dated July 25, 1803. Inscriptions: Property of Box on verso of Table of Offices and Conditions of Men (following OT) reads, "This Bible is the Property of David & Alice Haines."  Family Record is somewhat filled in; the marriage records appear to be that of David and Alice Haines' children Benjamin and Mary.  Various birth and death records are all filled in. Additional Reference: Hills' #102 reads, "1080 p...Preliminary matter includes Order of Books and an Index of Articles Annexed.  With Apocrypha in smaller type.  NT title imprinted Third Philadelphia Edition.  Has same added materials as in Carey's 1801 quarto (No 77) except the Subscribers' Names, Preface, and A Clergyman's Address to Married Persons are omitted.  Added are A Concise View of Evidences of the Christian Religion by J. Fletcher and A Table of Passages in the Old Testament quoted by Christ and His Apostles in the New Testament.  Colophon: T.S.
