Description
I'm launching a series of digital "reprints" on CD of various old musical instruments trade catalogs and other antique music related books and prints and new items similar to this are added to my eBay store all the time. And don't hesitate to ask me if you can't find what you're looking for. There are hundreds of other titles in peparation. Please note that the item in this and my other ebook auctions are reproductions, not originals. Here is a CD with a facsimile of the 1897 edition of Standard Musical Association's Members' Catalogue.PreviewsHere are a few scaled down samples from the ebook. (You can click on the images to view slightly larger versions.) Please note that the large images above are still much smaller than the ones on the CD. You can click here for a full size scan of one of the pages if you want to see the quality available from the CD.DescriptionKey data Short title:Members' Catalogue Full title:LATEST EDITION / MEMBERS' CATALOGUE // THE / STANDARD / MUSICAL / ASSOCIATIONPublisher:Standard Musical AssociationCountry:USADate:1897Language:EnglishCD edition:No. of scans:199Resolution:180 dpiEbook size:163.1 MBOrder code:SMA1897Physical description of the originalThe size is 29.7 cm height and 22.4 cm width. My copy consists of two different books bound together, the SMA catalog itself and a promotion book for a collection of songs and piano pieces named "Favorite Masterpieces."The 126 numbered pages of the catalog are printed black-and-white on fairly light paper. The original front cover is made from heavy textured blue lpaper and printed in dark blue on the outside only. The original back cover was removed during rebinding. Presumably it was blank and made from the same paper as the front. The "Favorite Masterpieces" promo book consists of 52 pages and nine plates printed black-and-white on heavy semigloss plus cover printed black-and-white on slightly heavier paper. Since these are pages taken from a larger book, the pagination is out of sequence. The binding of the volume as a whole is rather amateurish but it still seems clear that it was done by SMA before distribution. The front cover is made from cardboard covered with a sheet of art nouveau style flower pattern "tapestry on the inside and black cloth on the outside. The back cover is actually made from the back cover of the complete version of "Favorite Masterpieces" (complete with the spine attached!) turned around and covered with the same black cloth as the front cover.Towards the end of the volume tow sheets of blank, lined writing paper has been added for no apparent reason.ContentPage(s)ContentComments1Title page 2Index 3-59Sheet music list 60Introduction page to the rest of the catalog 61Violins23 models of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full size models listed. Three illustratiions show one standard violin, one fretted violin and one violin with "patent heads" (machine heads).62Guitars and ukuleles10 models listed, four illustrations.63Banjos and banjorines15 models listed, three illustrations. All instruments here are of the Tremont brand.64Mandolins11 models listed, three illustrations.65-66Accordeons21 models listed, 12 illustrations No brand names mentioned but at least two are Kalbe Imperial instruments.67-70Musical boxes, symphonions, roller organs etc.24 models listed, 16 illustrations.71Guitar-zithers and autoharpsSeven models listed, six illusrations. The guitar-zithers are Menzenhauer and carries a May 29, 1894 patent date. The autoharps are unbranded but given the age of the catalog they're probably either Müller or Zimmerman.72Xylophones, jews harps, tambourinesXylophones: Five models listed, one illustrationJaw's harps: Five models listed, one illustration Three are listed as "English," one is by Smith, Ireland while the fifth is anonymous.Tambourines:12 models listed, three illustrated.73Flageolets (tin whistles), pan pipes, calliope pipes, ocarinas23 models listed, six illustrations. No brand names listed but illustrations show a C. Clark's (England) tin whistle, a U.S. (USA) tin whislte and a Ch. Mattiheu (France) tin flageolet.74-80Stringed instruments equipment and accessories 81German concertinas and German harmonicasConcertinas: nine models listed, no illustrationsHarmonicas: Five models listed, all of them with illustrations. All harmonicas are ten-hole Richter style "blues harmonicas." One is unbranded, two are by Seydel, one by Ludwig and one by Hohner.Perhaps the most interesting thing with the harmonica section is what's not there: The catalog was published year Hohner signed their sponsorship deal with Sousa and introduced the Marine Band but the Hohner model included is still the 34B (later to be known as "The Old Standby.")82-83Misc. accessories 84The Graphophone Talking machineAn early phonograph model illustrated and described.85The Wilbur Grand Upright PianoIllustrated.86The Champion OrganIllustrated.87-88Sewing machines(!) 89-92Magazines and newspapersList of subscriptions available to the SMA members, presumably at a special price.92-126BooksSMA seems to have been seeling almost as much literature as music and the list offers a fascinating glimpse into what kind of books sold to the general public in the USA at the end of the 19th century. Sub-sections are: agricultural works, religious and theological works, poetry, standard literature and standard fiction. Illustrated with book covers and portraits of various authors.Favorite Masterpieces promoA complete list of the content here would take far too much space. There are excerpts from several popular (at that time) pieces for piano solo and for voice and piano. Only one of the pieces is complete though so perhaps the most interesting content are the numerous illustrations and the pictures and occasional biographies of late 19th C. U.S. composers.FormatThe CD presents the catalog in a choice of three different formats: high resolution (180 dpi) JPEG scans for maximum quality, HTML format allowing you to leaf through the scans as if it was a paper book and PDF format for quick reference with all pages in a single document. It is readable on any reasonably modern computer with a CD drive.Other ebooksDon't forget to visit my eBay store regularly!
