The shaft and tip are metal, the rope is 5/16" pure manilla whipped with black nylon cord. Lewis Temple invented this harpoon tip which is named after him (Temple Toggle). A skilled blacksmith from New Bedford, MA, Temple a former slave, in 1848 created a new type of harpoon with a moveable head that prevented the whale from slipping loose.
