Description
72pc REED BARTON FRANCIS I STERLING SILVER FLATWARE SET Presented is a wonderful quality 72 piece sterling silver flatware set made by Reed & Barton. The set is done in the desirable Francis I pattern which was first produced in 1907. This set is a complete service for 12. It has never been monogrammed or engraved. The knives have sterling silver handles and stainless steel blades. All of the other pieces are solid sterling silver. It should be noted that this is a very old set and many of the pieces bear the original patent date. This is described in full down below. The set includes: 12 knives: 9 1/8 inches 12 forks: 7 1/8 inches. All have the old patent date. 12 salad or dessert forks: 6 1/8 inches 12 teaspoons: 5 7/8 inches. Six have the old patent date. 12 round soup spoons: 5 7/8 inches. All have the old patent date. 12 butter spreaders: 5 7/8 inches The knives are marked Sterling Handle on the handles and Reed & Barton Mirrorstele on the blades. The other pieces are hallmarked on the reverse with Reed & Bartons old company hallmarks and Sterling. Some of the pieces are also marked Pat. June 25, 1907, as described above. The condition is excellent. The knives have a couple of little dings on the handles, but this is minor. There are no dents, no splits, no monograms, no monogram removals, no breaks, and no repairs. The weight of the solid sterling silver pieces is 2497 grams or 87.5 ounces. This does not include the weight of the knives because of the stainless steel blades. This set comes with an optional, free, bonus box as seen in the photographs. The box is a felt lined wooden box. The box has surface wear but is effective in protecting the set against tarnishing. This box is free, and is not considered to be part of the value of this auction. If you do not want the box let us know and we can reduce shipping fees accordingly. The dark or light spots that you see on the silver are merely reflections from the camera lens or camera or our lights. They are not defects or damages. Any damages to the piece are listed above in the condition part of the description. Once again, they are just reflections. It should be noted that this is a very old set and many of the pieces bear the original patent date. The pieces that bear the patent date were probably made within 7 or 8 years of the original patent. Many of them were likely made within the first 3 years, between 1907 - 1910. This is my best guess. The exact year cannot be determined. American silver does not have year stamps on the pieces like some of the European countries do on their silver. The other pieces in this set, that do not have the patent date, have the older Reed & Barton hallmark. I believe Reed & Barton changed their mark sometime in the 1950's to the more modern mark. I think these pieces are significantly older than the 1950's, they are probably from the 1920's to the 1930's.
