Description
- 82-plate SUJI KABUTO (ribbed helmet), signed "Kunishige". - Some suji about 4-5 cm dowm from the tehen, on the left die, are worn down by rust, other is fine, original condition. - This is a fine example of what Japanese armorers were capable of doing, a few of them going as far as creating 120-plate helmets (very rare). The rearmost plate bears the signature "Kunishige saku", while at the front there appears to be a date which is difficult to decipher ("4th month, on a lucky day...in the year of...").- The front visor or mabisashi, is the original one and is also in russet iron, as is the forecrest, or haraidate. The top of the haraidate is cut with three "V"-shaped indentations known as "irihasso".-The shikoro (neck protector) is composed of 5 iron lames surfaced in black lacquer. The shikoro is laced with pairs of dark blue silk laces (kon-ito sugake odoshi). The shikoro is post Edo, probably Meiji or Taisho.
