Description
An extremely rare workshop lamp by AEG, probably designed by Peter Behrens in the 1920sThis is a fabulous opportunity to acquire a true icon of Twentieth Century design and the Modern Movement. It's no exaggeration to describe Behrens's appointment as artistic director of AEG in 1907 as a turning point in design history; it was the first time a major international company had employed a single designer to advise on all aspects of its corporate identity, accommodation and output. Besides creating new premises for the company - including the Turbine Factory, itself a landmark of modernism - he devised a new range of groundbreaking and consciously forward-looking electrical products - including lighting, clocks and kettles. The lamp is contructed from lacquered metal and is signed with the AEG company factory mark from the Behrens period on the shade. The two arm sections measure around 51cm (20 inches) and 25 cm (9.5 inches). The shade's diameter is about 17cm (7 inches). The lamp pivots on a ball and socket joint, allowing full manouevrability.Condition: The lamp is in extremely good original condition with just expected signs of age and only minor wear to the surface of the enamel. There are no significant damages such as no splits, cracks or dents or signs of restoration. The worst area of enamel loss is a small area on the inside of the shade along the rim; this is illustrated the final photo. The lamp has obviously been extremely well handled over the decades and is an excellent survivor. the lamp retains vintage wiring that has degraded and is electrictrically untested. It must be inspected and rewired by a qualified electrician before use. Please see my note below concerning the sale of all vintage electrical items.References: See Wright Auction House, Chicago, Modernists, 14 September, 2003 Lot 340, Estimate $900-1200 for a similar AEG desk lamp by Behrens with the same shaped shade. That lamp appeared at an exhibition entitled Sitting on the Edge, at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1998.Don't miss this fantastic piece of authentic Bauhaus-era industrial design. A great historical talking point and functional item for your home, office or workshop.© Text and photographs by room_606. It may be possible for overseas customers to pay by another means, such as bank transfer in GBP£, by prior arrangement. All buyers please make contact within 3 days of auction. Payment is required within 7 days. Non-paymentAll non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. This is not for the sake of being vindictive, but because eBay charges retrospective fees calculated on the actual sale price of items and this money needs to be retrieved. It's hard enough to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please refer to eBay's policy on non-payment for more information, including its ramifications for the bidder.Condition of itemsPlease note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique items and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs.Vintage electrical itemsUnless clearly stated otherwise in the description, vintage electrical items are sold in their original condition without electrical guarantee and must always be safety checked by an electrician before use in the country of use.ReturnsReturns are possible, if reported within 7 days and by prior arrangement, if a mistake has been made in the listing and the item is not as described, but for no other reason. I'm afraid that straightforward buyer's remorse does not qualify and the cost of return postage is not included in any refund. kThat's it...please don't hesitate to contact me if there is anything you need to know that I have overlooked; I always endeavour to answer queries as quickly as possible.
