Yes, many AAs can be heard to say: Anyone can stop drinking and often add: The problem is how to stay stopped. One of A.A.'s Oxford Group mentors, Charles Clapp, Jr., wrote a book about his drinking (The Big Bender). His later book was titled, Drinking's Not the Problem. Dr. Bob read them both (See Dick B., Dr. Bob and His Library). Clapp's two book titles make this point. The battle does not begin when we try to stop drinking. It begins when the alcoholic has to face the world without a drink. There's much more to the problem than drinking. One old saw that has made the rounds in A.A. for years says: If you sober up a horse thief, what do you then have? The answer is–a sober horse thief! There's more to the problem than drinking. And I'd go much much further than that based on my own real experience. From: A History of The Big Book - Alcoholics Anonymous Written by Donald B. In fact, there was a fellow, Charles Clapp, an Oxford Grouper, who Bill had helped get sober in October of 1935. Charles had been working with Sam Shoemaker, but could not stay sober until he got help from Bill. Charles wrote a book called "The Big Bender" that relates that story. Clapp was from Bedford Hills. His book was written around 1938 and in 1942 he wrote another book called "Drunks Are Square Pegs." In that book he wrote that now that he understood everything about alcoholism, it would be possible for him to drink and control his drinking if he chose. In the A.A. Grapevine of about May 1945, he wrote that now that he had returned to Alcoholics Anonymous, that had you read his second book, to please disregard that information. I just wanted to add that note because we seldom hear about Charles, even though we do know about him, and I believe he was a member. WORLD SERVICES at  the request of AAWS has taken auctions toward the infringement of the mis-use of the  Alcoholics Anonymous "words" used in the "Title" portion of items up for bid on e-bay by notifying e-bay of the violation of the mis-use.  thus e-bay has had to  take action against violators "reported" by having items/auction cancelled. This has been done along with a notification of "permanent suspension" by e-bay if further incidents/violations occur. Thus many have had to change their listings so they would "not" infringe on copyright/trademark/etc laws. They have done this by  "not" using the words Alcoholics Anonymous in the "title" portion of items  which "are not" actually printed/published/distributed/etc by Alcoholics Anonymous ***I CONCUR that many items currently and previously on e-bay should not have the name Alcoholics Anonymous associated with them  as it does give appearance that Alcoholics Anonymous is affiliated with that item or endorsed by Alcoholics Anonymous (which they are not or have been). Example is that most members are aware that Alcoholics Anonymous "is not"  nor is it "associated" with the "washingtonian temperance movement" or "The oxford group"  (although early aa  does have some historical ties to these outfits). Alcoholics Anonymous is not  currently affiliated with any other "organization/etc" PLEASE read Tradition Six!  ..So please use search "title and description" using keywords or just the word "alcoholics" for a larger selection of available items if you are interested in this type of memorabilia  :**THIS COULD MAKE A NICE GIFT OR ADDITION TO AN Alcoholics Anonymous memorabilia COLLECTION.....pete  Place a Bid!
