Description
AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FAIENCE KHNUM Click on the text links to view enlargements: 1-2 Faience couchant figure of the ram god, Khnum. Late Period, 600-50 B.C. 5/8 inch. Tiny chip on base. Otherwise, intact with intact suspension loop. From an old German collection, collected in the early 1950's. In Egyptian mythology, one of the creator gods, Khnum was one of the earliest Egyptian deities, originally the god of the source of the Nile River. Since the annual flooding of the Nile brought with it silt and clay, and its water brought life to its surrounds, he was thought to be the creator of the bodies of human children, which he made at a potter's wheel, from clay, and placed in their mothers' wombs.
