Description
ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY SHAVING MUG PORCELAIN W/ GOLD GILT Click to open supersize image This antique porcelain pottery shaving mug would date from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. It is white with gold gilt around the top edge, spout, handle, and bottom rim. There is a lovely embossed decoration on the body of the mug, under the pour spout, and on the curved and tabbed handle. It measures 3 3/4 inches high, is 2 1/2 inches across the base, and is 5 inches from the tip of the spout to the end of the handle. The top basin would hold a cake of shaving soap, and it has three drainage holes to drain excess water and suds from the soap. The tabbed handle made it easier to hold the soapy, slippery mug while shaving. The spout on the lower section was for pouring away the excess water and suds. It could also be used to store the shaving brush between shaves. This style of shaving mug is sometimes called a "Coal Scuttle" which has a similar shape. This mug is unmarked on the base, most likely an old English piece. The condition of this shaving mug is excellent with NO cracks, chips, flea bites, or repairs. The gold gilt is worn from the spout, and very slightly worn from the top rim and handle. There are a couple of extra clay bumps/inclusions on the body of the mug, and a very slight stain inside the top basin. The embossed decoration is crisp, not rubbed or worn, and this mug has nice weight to it.Guaranteed old and NOT a reproduction piece--a lovely antique shaving mug in extremely good condition!!Check out the other pottery, stoneware and yellow ware itemsthat I currently have for sale!!
