Description
I am pleased to offer you this wonderful Rare Ornate Silver (EP?) Asparagus Server made by “WM HUTTON Company” (Silversmiths), in Birmingham England - circa 1930. This outstanding piece features 2 twin, magnificent ornate Victorian silhouette cut and etched silver palettes, joined by a large “U” shaped retracting handle assembly and retainer with a ornate Victorian designed patterns on both outer surfaces of the handle. The piece also features the makers signature Hallmarks on the inside of the lower handle surface. It reads “W. H inside an Oval hallmark; a “&” inside a shield hallmark; a “S” inside an oval hallmark; a “B” inside a square hallmark; and a “D” or a “P” inside what looks like an apple on its side hallmark. This piece does not say the word sterling and I’m not sure what the hallmarks mean. The only information that I can find about “W.M Hayes Co.” always refered to their pieces as "Solid Silver" (probabley electro plaie - see below) , not Sterling and nor plate. I’m sure that someone will email me with the silver content and I’ll post that email. Please note - the following was sent to me by a viewer: Hi! After two evenings of searching, I think it is this: WILLIAM HUTTON & SONS Sheffield The firm was established in Birmingham in 1800 by William Hutton, and was transferred to Sheffield in 1832. After the founder's death the business was continued under the style of William Hutton by his son William Carr Hutton. The firm was transformed in William Hutton & Sons in 1864 and William Hutton & Sons Ltd from 1893 to 1930. In 1930 goodwill transferred to James Dixon & Sons Ltd. which makes it only electroplate. The asking price seems high to me, with that in mind. What do you think? I would be careful that someone is not disappointed, or thinks you mislead into thinking solid coin or sterling silver. Very beautiful though! found here: http://www.silvercollection.it/electroplatesilverH.html#HUT1 The server is 9” long, weighs 112 grams and is in very nice condition. The piece shows no wear. Please note that sometime in the last 107 years someone scribed into the top surface, of the inner handle surface, (see photo) the numbers "67385 5828" and the letters "A & H". These numbers could polished out if they seemed offensive or damaging to the item. This Great item comes from a large Sterling Silver Collection of a high-end, Palm Springs, California Estate. Many of the pieces were either wedding or anniversary gifts of the 100+ year old collector. The price of Silver is now at only about 50% of where it was a number of months ago and at only about 20% of its all time high. Collecting desirable and ornate antique higher grade silver pieces is not only a great hobby but can be quite profitable as well. Don’t miss this wonderful piece. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLOSE-UP LENS ON THE CAMERA SOMETIMES SHOWS THE ITEMS AS BEING A LITTLE OUT OF PROPORTION OR OBSCURE. I GUARANTEE THE ITEMS TO BE IN STRAIGHT AND PERFECTLY PROPORTIONED.
