Visit our store! Offered here is an Antique Art Nouveau Era Circa Early 1900s Cased Gilbert Clock depicting a Lovely Art Nouveau Style figure of Greek Mythology, Klio or Clio, the Muse of Heroic Poetry and History. Gilbert clock is cased in a bronze patinated painted ceramic sculptural statue signed “Crown Vienna” with the initials, “FM” overlapped within a circle. We believe this piece was made by the Sculptor, Franz Metzner, who worked with the Wiener Werkstatte from 1904 until 1911. It was common that clock cases were made overseas and shipped to the United States for clock companies. This is one of the best clock cases we have seen! A rare Museum Quality piece! Magnificent statue of this lovely beauty has spectacular details! Nude lady is seated on the cased clock pedestal leaning on a book, as Clio is often shown, and is draped with a light cloth accenting the long braid which lies across her legs. She wears an Art Nouveau headpiece with a central medallion. Her deep longing look draws the viewer’s attention like no other! ”In Greek mythology, Clio (Greek: ?????) or Kleio is the muse of heroic poetry and history. Like all the muses, she is a daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne. She had one son, Hyacinth, with the King of Macedonia, Pierus. Some sources say she was also the mother of Hymenaios. She is often represented with a parchment scroll or a set of tablets and is also known as the Proclaimer.” Gilbert cased clock has a white porcelain face and is accented with an ornate deep dish gilded framing covered in glass with a beveled edge. Clock case and statue are made of a cast ceramic painted to resemble bronze. Faint remnants of over painting seen as gold flecks in hair and tones of green/gilding on cloth. Simply like no other! Such an amazing representation of the Art Nouveau time period; one can see the resemblance to Maxfield Parrish and other notable artists during this Fabulous Art Movement! Signed “Klio” on front side with a “Crown Vienna” of Vienna, Austria, with crown stamp on the backside and another stamp below it which appears to be an overlap of the initials “FM”. These are possibly the initials for Franz Metzner (1870-1919), a German Artist who is known for his sculptures in plaster and stone. One of his notable works involved working with the Wiener Werkstatte for the interior of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, Belgium, where he created sculptures for the interior. He worked with the Royal Porcelain Factory of Berlin, Germany, until 1903, when he began to teach in Vienna in 1904 while working with the Wiener Werkstatte until 1911. Could this have been when this statue was made, while working with the Wiener Werkstatte?! We welcome any comments from knowledgeable collectors! A statue by Franz Metzner recently sold for $2,000. at Sotheby’s. Clock face is marked “Made in United States of America by Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co; Winsted, Conn”. Movement is marked “Gilbert Clock Co; Winsted, Conn, USA; 14749; Pat. Dec 23, 1902” and “HT814885G” is etched along inner door’s edge. Item is cosmetically in excellent condition for its age with very minor surface wear. She is missing her left big toe, which has been professionally repainted so no white shows. The break is more so on the underside, so it is not seen when viewed straight on. Very minor scuffs on legs and pedestal, barely exposing plaster. A bit of white showing through on underside and top of arm and underside of chin/hair, which is not seen when viewed straight on. The clock’s face has a 1” hairline at the “7”. The glass door has a 1” scratch along the bottom edge. The movement appears to be mostly clean. Pendulum is included. We were told that this clock works, but we do not have the clock key to test it. Sold As-Is! Measures approximately 19.5" high on a 10 1/8“ wide and 4 5/8“ deep base. Clock face glass is 3.5“ in diameter.
