jabcab store ART NOUVEAU SLAG GLASS LAMPS CARAMEL & GREEN Please read the ENTIRE listing carefully and ask any questions BEFORE bidding. Bidding is a contract to buy the item "As Is" and "As Described and Photographed" if you are the winning bidder. Thanks and Good luck!! ART NOUVEAU SLAG GLASS LAMPS 2 CARAMEL & GREEN For your consideration, a pair of early 20th Century, Caramel Slag Glass Lamps. These are amazing old Art Nouveau style table or desk lamps and were purchased from an estate, where they had been for the last 50 or 60 years. They look to be from the early 1900's and have everything going for them right down to a wonderful patina. They straddle two categories, in my opinion, Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts, as they have elements of both styles incorporated into their lovely design. The four sided metal shades are made with a sort of flared-scalloping around the narrow tops and wider bottoms. There is a lovely applied floral motif around the, almost, heart shaped openings that frame the four slag glass panels on each. These flowers, vines and leaves are painted red, green and blue. When turned off, the slag glass panels appear to be a darker color, but when lit they glow with a warmer hue as can be seen in the photographs. The shades cover a single socket and measure 3 1/4" by 3 1/2 at top of flair to 7 1/2" at the bottom and are 7 1/4" tall .They are in lovely antique condition with a few tiny breaks in the metal around the top, creating a few sharp places. This is to be expected due to their age and the thinness of the metal, but only serves to add character to these great little works of art and actually looks as if it is a part of the design. It doesn't look like there has been any attempt to repair these places. These definitely look hand wrought, nothing on them looks mass produced. The slag glass panels are a rich, warm caramel/amber & green in color. These eight panels measure approximately 3 1/4" across the top by 5" tall by 5" across the bottom and are in lovely condition with no chips or cracks that I can find. All appear to be original with the exception of the greenest looking one in the fifth photo. That looks to me to be just different enough to send up a flag that it is not original to the lamp. The center section that connects the top and bottom has a hammered pattern on all four sides. There is some rubbing to the surface along the edges, which has removed the finish in some small areas. But again this seems to blend with the design, so does not deter from the overall look. The hammered section is trimmed by a narrow, flat tier at the top and bottom. These two tier stations are painted in blue. The base has a great, raised design of large teardrops and marquis shapes. These shapes are accented, in the same red and blue paint as the flowers and vines on the shades and the colors alternate around the perimeter. The base is made of a heavier metal to give it stability and may be made of wrought iron, but I cannot say for sure. It measures 5 1/4" by 5 3/4" and is in nice condition with a bit of a weathered or distressed look also. Both of these old lamps were rewired, most likely, for safety reasons at some point and the style of the plugs look like the 1950's or 60's. There are no makers marks or stickers to solve the mystery of what gifted craftsman created these old beauties. There is a sideways, bold, capital "A" on the light switch for the single bulb. This "A", just might be a clue to the origin of these lamps or it may not. If any one has a "clue' I would love to know. Many slag glass lamps are not signed with a maker’s mark according to the information I found while researching these antique lights. All of the metal on these 2 pieces has a weathered, almost "distressed" look which, I feel, is part of the original design treatment. There are some small spots of what looks like oxidation to the metal. I mention this for the sake of accuracy, but I do think that it is part of the overall feel of the lamps and of course the elements and time always have their way with metal materials. Which is to be expected with anything this old, made of metal and living in Florida. There are a few small rough edges here and there where the metal has formed a tiny crack as I mention previously, but they just add to the overall theme of the design. These are wonderful artistic examples of a time gone by when attention to detail was a standard feature not a luxury and would be a stunning addition to any Arts & Crafts or Art Nouveau decor. They would look great in an Old World, Mission, or Arts and Crafts style den or library. Even as bedside lamps with the right decor. What a nice statement of style, they will make in your home and will only gain in value as you enjoy their presence in your home. These are definitely keepers. Grab them quick before someone else does!---------------------------------------------(FYI; Electric Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts style lamps originated during the same time period but differed in design. Art Nouveau is all about natural forms, with curved lines and textured surfaces with flowers, leaves, fruits, animals, and birds. Art Nouveau (meaning NEW ART) was largely a influenced by the European movement and many stunning lamps from this period are by French makers such as Lalique, Gallé, and Daum Nancy. The Arts and Crafts style, less ornate than Art Nouveau, was primarily developed in the United States and the British Isles. Its emphasis was on hand-crafting with close attention to the natural beauty inherent in the materials used to make objects.)
