Description
ATHERSTONE CHURCH FONT Orig WYATT & BRANDON c1850 THOMAS HENRY WYATT (1807-1880) DAVID BRANDON (1813-97)Son of Mathew Wyatt, elder brother of Sir Mathew Digby Wyatt, and first cousin of James Wyatt, T. H. Wyatt trained in Philip Hardwick’s office before setting up his own practice in Great Russell Street with David Brandon in 1839. Wyatt & Brandon were also involved with the L.N.W Railway Company building a church for them at the newly created railway town of Wolverton in 1843. Here a carriage works was founded in 1838 and during the 1840’s two hundred houses & a Parish church were built. Wolverton became the first railway station in the world to have a church erected for the benefit of a purely railway resident population. Brandon and Wyatt were prolific church architects including St John, Tixall in Staffordshire. This was commissioned in 1848 by the Hon John Chetwynd Talbot (3rd son of Charles Chetwynd, 2nd Earl Talbot of Ingestre) as an act of piety to be his mausoleum. It was consecrated on Whit-Tuesday 1849. THE DRAWINGThe item on offer here is the Wyatt & Brandon design drawing for the font at Atherstone Church c1850. Unframed it measures approx 18 x 14 inches. Architects amber paper. Signed WYATT & BRANDON ARCHITECTS lower right. The overall condition is good but there is some light creasing and mild staining. UK p&p £6 - International p&p £9PROVENANCEThis drawing is from a very important collection of original designs by some of the great architects of the 19th century including A. W. N. Pugin, Sir Charles Barry, Philip Hardwick, Thomas Henry Wyatt & David Brandon. Possibly the single most remarkable portfolio of architectural designs of the period to appear on the open market, the list of drawings included designs for the Houses of Parliament, Westminster; The Reform Club; the Provost’s Lodge (now library) Kings College, Cambridge; Birmingham Station, the London & Birmingham Railway Company; University of London including a section of the Great Dome. Many of these drawings were included in ARCHITECTS FOR A NEW AGE (The Gothic Revival To The Arts & Crafts Movement 1827-1927) an exhibition held at the Fine Art Society in September & October 2008. The portfolio itself was from the offices of Wyatt & Brandon and the collection also comprised of drawings for church architecture by this partnership. It would appear Francis Wigg was involved with many Wyatt & Brandon commissions. I am offering other drawings from the collection in my eBay shop, please view my other items.
