Description
Afghan Baluch Salt Bag Oriental Rug. About our Bags Oriental Rug Review Antiques and Tribal Rugs is pleased to offer a knotted pile Afghan Baluch salt bag, Taimani, Western Afghanistan, c. 1950s, 1'3"x1'6". It is a complete bag with flatwoven bagface and flatwoven back. About the weaver. We know that she was a woman for it was they who did the weaving in Baluch society. The Taimani inhabit an area to the east of Herat in Ghor Province. They are the largest sub-tribe in a four sub-tribe alliance known as the Chahar Aimaq Confederation. Chahar Aimaq is Turkic/Mongol for "four tribes", which are the Hazara, Firozkhoi, Jamshidi and Taimani. These are semi-nomadic groups, spending winters in towns and summers in tents at summer pasturage. This is a salt bag, namakdan Persian = salt bag (carrier), made expressly by Taimanis for the storage of salt. Salt was necessary for life. Saltworks were few and far between on migration routes. The bag has a neck and narrow opening so if the bag was jostled loose in travel, a minimum of salt would be lost by spillage. On the beautiful red grounded field are blue and gold stepped geometric figures This bag is nicely accented by bundled yarn poms. There is a small disturbed area on the neck of the bag's back. Bargaining at a Saltworks The back of the bag Buyers contacting us by e-mail, please include your full mailing address so that we can calculate shipping charges.
