Offered is the first edition of one of the most important collections of 18th century poetry, the famous “Miscellany” volume of poetry published by Bernard Lintot in 1712, probably edited by Alexander Pope and containing the first appearance in print of Pope’s great satire “The Rape of the Lock.” The full and proper title of the volume is “Miscellaneous Poems and Translations / By Several Hands.” Pope’s “Rape of the Lock” is, of course, one of the most famous satirical poems in English; it tells the story of the theft of a lock of Belinda’s (Arabella Fermor’s) hair, as well as the aftermath of the theft, and constitutes the perfection of the ‘mock-epic’ style. The allusions to Homer’s epics are wonderfully subtle, witty and numerous. The poem’s opening is justly famous: “What dire offence from amorous causes springs / What mighty contests rise from trivial things.” Several others of Pope’s poems make their first appearance in this volume, including his translation of the first book of the “Thebais” of Statius, his translation of “The Fable of Vertumnus and Pomona” from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and the genuinely hilarious “To the Author of a Poem Entitled Successio.” In total, 8 works by Pope appear in this miscellany, 5 for the first time. Also present in this important collection are works by Prior, Gay, Dryden, Broome and Fenton. The volume is complete in all respects and is adorned with a fine allegorical engraved frontispiece. The volume comprises 376 pages and collates [5], B-X8, Aa-Bb8. It measures 19.7 cm by 12.8 cm by 2.8 cm; each page measures 189 mm by 118 mm. The volume is very attractive bound in modern paneled calf with a spine divided by raised bands into 6 compartments and bearing the author’s name, the title and the date of publication in gilt. Internally, the pages are bright and clean with ample margins, the print is clear and crisp throughout, and the frontispiece is an excellent impression. In all, this is a very attractive copy of one of the most important volumes of 18th century, the Miscellany of 1712 with 8 poems by Alexander Pope, 5 of which appear in print for the first time, including the famous “Rape of the Lock,” published by Bernard Lintott, probably edited by Pope, printed in octavo at London, bound in full paneled calf and offered at a reasonable reserve.
