Description
An Embossed Silver Bowl : Queen Anne 'Crown' Base 1708 An Embossed Silver Bowl : Queen Anne Crown Base  DESCRIPTION:  An embossed silver bowl of cauldron style formed to encase a Queen Anne Crown(I think this is the correct denomination I can't be certain) dated 1708. The bowl has a variety of very ornate embossed floral patterning, including flowers, leaves and vines. There is also a face of an elderly man with an elongated walrus moustache and flowing hair, which, I believe, personifies the West Wind, a symbol of good fortune. Opposite to this is a scrolled cartouche which is without inscription. The silver is much later and is dated 1884. It was a Victorian fashion to re-use or redesign older silver objects, enhancing them with elaborate patterns and detail. The irregular repousse work indicates it was a hand crafted piece of considerable skill. The detail is superb showing great depth and solidity to the embossment, aided by a good guage of silver. The shilling is central to the design  and clearly the jug is designed to show off the coin, however, on this occasion I think the silversmith has the upper hand  INFORMATION: Crown: Queen Anne, 1708 (for those of you  unfamiliar with the British monarchy naming system; there is no number attached to her name because she was the only Queen Anne ). Bowl: Assayed: London 1884 : it bears Queen Victoria's head as a duty mark Maker: Rosenthal, Jacob & Co (Julius (Judah) Rosenthal & Samuel Jacob), London CONDITION: I am not a coin expert  and can only offer my opinion based on appearance. The coin appears to be in quite good condition for something that is over 300 years old, there are some visible scratches on the bust side of the coin. The bowl is in excellent condition with no dents or damage. The silver shows a good patina.  DIMENSIONS: Weight: 94g Diameter at Rim: 8cm Diameter at Base: 7.5cm Circumference: 32cm (approx) Height: 4.8cm A great opportunity to acquire a rare piece of silver of such great quality... low starting price of £0.99 ... no reserve...bid now !!   I accept payment by Paypal, Personal Cheque (this will take time for me to receive, deposit and wait seven working days for clearance : (not recommended if you want the item quickly) or Postal Order (crossed for safety). I would never deliberately mislead, but, I occasionally get things wrong For any purchase the buyer should make an informed choice based on the information provided and if they are in any doubt then do not buy it I am very tolerant of returns based on damage and loss but I will not accept things like: 'You said it was 1940s, my brother told me it was at least 1953 so I don't want it' 'I thought it was bigger'           'It's a much darker blue than I expected' etc  A lot of auction purchases are based on impulse and heat of the moment decisions, this can often lead to buyer remorse, if you are prone to this you should not bid at auctions I hope this never happens I spend a lot of my time attending auctions throughout the UK and I have built up a varied collection over the years. Due to lack of space I do from time to time declutter and sell items mostly, these days, through Ebay. I also buy things, that I see at auction which I believe to be a good price and that I can resell at a small profit, thus helping me to pay my expenses. I am not running a business but I am trying to pay for my indulgence.
