It is an authentic antique map, well over 100 years old, and not a copy or repro of any kind. It is contained in a small leather book cover, that measures approx. 3 & 1/2 inches tall by 2 & 1/4 inches wide, with gold lettering that reads: " U. States ". The map folds out to a size of approx. 10 & 1/2 inches wide by approx. 8 & 1/2 inches tall. It is quite delicate, and there is some separation on folds, and a small hole over the top of Louisiana, but overall it is in very good, as-found condition, with no large tears or damage, nice bright colors, and absolutely no repairs or restorations of any kind. The scans of it are very accurate, and should leave nothing to the imagination. It is signed " J.H. Young Sc. " in very small letters on the lower margin, but I cannot seem to find any other maker's names or dates on it, aside from some printing on the upper left corner which reads: " Border between United States and Russia - Settled by Convention, April 25th, 1824 ". ~~~ I flunked geography in school, and now my ignorance is catching up with me! This little map is certainly pre Civil War, and probably pre railroad or railway for that matter. It shows such things as the Northwest Territory, Missouri Territory, the Oregon Territory, and most of California is shown as Mexico. It is hand colored, and there is some old quill pen writing on the lower right that says: " Emi??? William Newton Boardman - Norwich - 27 ", perhaps the original owner. This map is especially interesting because it shows where many of the Indian or Native American tribes were located at that time, including many of the California and North West coast tribes. Here are some examples: " Dacotah or Sioux Indians ", " Nagailer Indians ", " Atnah Indians ", " Killamuks ", "Shoshone or Snake Indians ", " Callapoewah Indians ", " Black Foot Indians", " Snare Indians" , " Sloud Cous Indians ", " Atnah Indians ", and the " Wakash Nation ", among others.
