Description
Where do I begin? This quilt, reminiscent of the Baltimore album quilts, appears to have been made in upstate New York around the middle of the 1800s. It is very unusual in that all of the appliques are heavily stuffed, giving each motif a carved look. The appliques are made of layers of color, using leaf green, turkey red that has abraded to rose, a pale gold/tan that could be a fugitive color (then perhaps not) and a soft grey. There are wreaths, urns, flowers, birds and vines, with a vine and flower border all the way around. On the back is written in neat, black script: This belongs to Mrs. Roger B. Williams, 306 North Cayuga (St.?), Ithaca, NY. If you look very closely at the fourth photo of the central motif, a bowl of flowers, the signature of the maker is beautifully embroidered in matching gold thread, but "Margaret" is all that I could read clearly. She did her signature in satin stitch embroidery that perfectly matches the script writing that was so meticulously done during that era. I have never seen anything like it. It measures 86"x90" and is heavily quilted with the tiniest stitches (ave. 12 SPI) in a clamshell pattern interspersed with scrolls. Very thin batting with a white back side and white applied binding. About 4 or 5 of the motifs have issues as shown in the last 2 photos. The red has abraded through to the stuffing. Included with the quilt will be a piece of fabric that perfectly matches the soft, abraded look of the turkey red, to apply over the most damaged pieces. One urn has already been replaced. However, 90% of the quilt is intact. No claims are made that this piece of textile history is perfect, but it could be made so with very little effort in the hands of a reasonably good seamstress. Similar quilts without issues (when and if they can be found!) sell in the $2,000+ range. Antiques are always an excellent investment. TERMS OF SALE (please, please read!): It can be difficult to purchase anything based on a picture. If you are unhappy, email me and RETURN IT!! I offer a full money back return policy including one-way shipping. Please return the item in the same condition that it was sent. All returns must be shipped back within 7 days of receipt with signature confirmation. International shipments: email me with proof of shipping. This is common sense. Most of my items are vintage or antique, from estate sales and local sources, and are offered in as is/as found condition. I could go on about “smoke free” and “pet free,” but the truth is that I have no idea where some of these items have been for the last 50 to 100 years or more . I do not launder larger items, particularly quilts, as I feel this is best left to the purchaser. If an item is outright filthy, I will not even buy it – but don’t expect a pristine, new product fresh out of the package. Let me be the first to say that I personally dislike reserve prices. I try not to use them. However, in some cases I need to in order to protect the investment I have in a particular item. eBay’s new fee structure makes it difficult for the small seller to turn a profit on most items, and can easily bring a loss on others. So, when I set a reserve it is a reasonable amount and prevents my taking a loss on certain pricier items. I guarantee that if you win an item at the reserve price, I have made some money and you have gotten a very good deal. PAYMENT via PayPal is due within 3 days. If non-payment is filed with eBay, then I won't accept a return. This is common courtesy. I ship WORLD WIDE. If you have any questions about customs, VAT, or shipping fees to your country, please check your country's web site or email me. The ebay item # is posted on your customs form and it is a violation of international law to forge customs documents. Please bear with me, as international sales are on the rise. This is quite a challenge! Barring unforeseen circumstances, your item(s) will ship on the next business day after your payment is received. If the aforementioned circumstances happen, I will let you know just as soon as I can. I ship via USPS Priority, which should get your item to you within 72 hours (domestic). Shipping cost is the actual USPS Priority cost based on weight and destination! I add NO handling charge -- EVER. If I estimated too much for shipping, then I will refund the difference. Please be aware that my feedback and detailed seller ratings are not the forum for protesting USPS shipping rates! Should you prefer a lower priced shipping method, please ask and I will comply with your wishes. Occasionally an item may cost more to ship than I quoted. In that case, I will absorb the difference. If I miscalculate and charge you too much shipping I will refund you the difference. This is the least that I can do. Your business, your satisfaction and your feedback are important to me. Thank you!
