Description
ANTIQUE, EMBOSSED AND CHASED, SILVER-GILT ALMS DISH. This curious and heavy piece of silver was found in a mid-19th century, French, gothic-style country chateau. It measures approximately 21 cm in diametre and weighs 474 g. It bears no identifying marks, but it tests as solid silver. The circular, central panel is fielded with a rope decoration and it is richly decorated with a European King in late-medieval costume, holding a sceptre, sat on a throne and receiving a bowl from a woman. The figure of the King is partly worn away. Around the central panel, are 6 panels richly decorated with European Kings and nobles in late-medieval costume and sat on thrones. Each panel is divided from the next by a stylized tree. The edge of the dish is folded and it stands on a simple foot-ring which has been pierced for hanging and is becoming detached. The dish has originally been heavily gilded, but this has mostly worn away. I have been told that, judging by the stylized tree decoration, this might be a piece of antique Ottoman silver. I have now received an e-mail suggesting that this dish is Hispano-Moresque or Venetian. Shipment will be strictly at cost! I have set a speculative price to start this rare item. FOLLOWING SEVERAL ENQUIRIES, THIS ITEM DOES NOT HAVE A 'BUY IT NOW' PRICE!
