Buddhist monk's ordination text. Burma / 18th century or before. Kammavaca are among the most sacred of Burmese religious texts. The Kammavaca is a collection of extracts from the Pali Vinaya, the monastic code of discipline, outlining rituals and observances of the Buddhistic order. It was customary for a Burmese family to commission a copy of the Kammavaca on the occasion of their son entering the monkhood. This volume consists of seventeen 27" x 5.25" leaves of text, with 33 pages covered in ancient script. The leaves are thick paper made of palm frond pulp. Thirty-four pages, with one cover present. In the 1980's, many of these historical volumes were dismembered, and individual pages sold by interior decorators, for as much as $500 per page. In wonderful vintage condition, with original warm patina. An exceptional work. Displays beautifully.
