Buddhist monk's ordination text. Burma / 19th century. Kammavaca are among the most sacred of Burmese religious texts. The Kammavaca is a collection of extracts from the Pali Vinaya, the monastic code of discipline, outlining rituals and observances of the Buddhistic order. It was customary for a Burmese family to commission a copy of the Kammavaca on the occasion of their son entering the monkhood. This volume consists of sixteen 20.75" x 4.25" leaves of text, written in "square" Burmese Pali script. The leaves consist of cloth, the fabric of discarded monk's robes, which has been lacquered to provide a rigid surface. The lacquered surface is gilded and the design is painted in red lacquer and finally the script applied in black laquer. The wooden covers, both front and back, are similarly gilded and decorated, with bevelled edges. Please notice the intricate handpainted illustrations of deity figures from Hindu-Buddhist mythology on the covers and some interior pages. For storage after reading, a bamboo pin would have been pushed through the small hole that runs through the entire book. This is a rare COMPLETE Kammavaca, with all 16 pages and both covers present. In the 1980's, many of these historical volumes were dismembered, and individual pages sold by interior decorators, for as much as $500 per page.
