AD ' Description The ring is astounding and as good, if not better, than any previously seen. The ring has been held in a private collection since the 1970's (owner now deceased). Originally thought to be of Saxon origins the ring is now thought to be of late Roman / early Byzantine in date - 6th Century AD. As soon as we recieved the ring we took it to Museum Services for expert opinion. It has been viewed by specialists at the British Museum and Veralanium Museum and the late Roman / Byzantine date assigned to the ring. The bezel has been expertly made with intricate filagree gold work to the centre. The ring is set with a single large garnet which in is also ornatley decorated with twisted filagree gold. The band of the ring is constructed of rope worked gold and the 2 shoulders of the ring are set with single gold nodules. The colour of the gold attests to its great age being a deep rich orange to gold. The ring has a wieght typical of its age @ 22 grams (heavy) and the bezel measures an impressive 28mm. A ring of this type would have been made to order and it is unique, there simply is not another like it. Mueseum services have said that the only way to totally be sure about the date of the rings manufacture is to undertake destructive tesing on the metal. As it is not a Treasure item under the Treasure Act the BM would not undertake this testing. Details of who has veiwed this ring and given verbal opinion will be released to the successful buyer.
