Description
Original Carder Steuben "Grotesque" Gold Ruby Vase Exquisite! (Carder jokingly called His free form Vases "Grotesque! Frederick Carder and Thomas Hawkes founded Steuben Glassworks in 1903. From 1903-1933, Carder designed and created many different forms of colored glass. One of his favorite was the Grotesque. All colored Grotesque were created before 1933. Once is a great while, one becomes available. This vase is an opportunity for the serious Steuben collector. I have been told Gold Ruby glass is made by mixing melted gold into a glass mixture, creating ruby glass. The adept glassmaker could give the full details, but this is the general concept as I understand it. I am not a chemist or glassmaker, so I don't know all the details. This beauty is 8" across and 5" high, the base is 3" across. I had two of them, one has sold, this is the only one left. I can find no signature, but I have been told it was not unusual to find unsigned Grotesque pieces; their construction alone made it difficult to sign. There are no chips or cracks, they are in fine condition, kept behind glass. They are affixed to their places with earthquake protected double tape. If you see any white in the photos at the base, the tape is the reason. Here in California, we have to be careful of such things. They are hand-blown, so no two are identical. Please email with any questions. Thanks from Enthasy! Heirloom: In perfect condition.
