Description
Chockwe chief's chair, SUPERB, African Artifact Type of Object: Chief's chair.Ethnic Group: ChockweCountry of Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo/(Zaire)Materials: Wood, pigments, tiny beads and metal tacks.Approximate Age:  20th centuryDimensions: Height is 42 inches. Seat width is 13 inches. Depth is 15 inches.Overall Condition: Excellent.Damage, Repair: Visible crack to front of base ring. Additional Information: The headdress on the figure is a kabond, a beaded crown. The throne is, itself, the figure of a chief, whose torso and arms form the back of the chair. The chair is in excellent condition except for an old break in the front bottom, visible in picture. Thrones in the style of European chairs began to be used beginning in the mid nineteenth century, when chiefs known as MWANANGANA (Lord of the Land) ruled by divine right, and their enthronement and court art reflected both religion and power.Among the Chokwe and their neighboring groups Figural chairs or stools were exclusively used by chiefs or dignitaries as symbol of authority. During special events chiefs or notables Mwanangana or Mwata such stools are used as a throne. Chokwe stools are also used as receptacle of supernatural forces. They serve symbolic purposes and are among the most prestigious and sacred objects. The figure represents the owner's ancestor, which presence assures protection and well-being. This example shows races of use and some age. It would be of good addition to any collection for what it represents.  See three examples of chief's thrones in Jordan's CHOCKWE.I have examined this figure and agree with the descriptionNiangi Batulukisi, Ph.D.  **W1251** All content, including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc., 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers!
