Description
This old wood pitch pipe has a remnant of a paper note attached to the side, with writing in ink, that says: Pitch pipe used 100 years ago to sing by. The style of handwriting on this note looks to be 100 years old itself, which likely dates this piece to the early 1800s, or perhaps earlier. This old pitch pipe still works by blowing on the mouthpiece and moving the slide in and out. There are age cracks in the wood, and the slide sticks when pushed all the way in, but it still sounds the notes. On both the top and bottom of the sliding piece are remnants of attached paper, with graduated markings and some notes of the scale (A, B) still visible on one of these pieces. The internal end of the slider has a piece of leather attached. The pieces of the pitchpipe are fastened with small wooden pegs. The air hole by the mouth piece is artistically made, with an indented curve and dots. The pitch pipe is about 8 inches long, 3 1/4 inches high, and 1 1/4 inches deep. This is a neat old musical instrument with wonderful patina. You will likely not see another like it.
