Egyptian CartonnagePtolemaic PeriodCirca 300 B.C.Mixed media with gold leaf on cloth.Cartonnage approximately 4 1/2 inches high by 9 inches wide by 1/8 inches deep; mounted on archival cotton in wood frame, 8 ΒΌ inches high by 12 inches wide.The Ptolemaic Period extends from 332 B.C to 30 B.C.Cartonnage is Linen or papyrus held together by glue and molded into coffins and funeral masks.The cartonnage was acquired 30 years ago from a private dealer in New York City. The image depicts a figure in black (the deceased?) flanked by eight priests and priestesses, four on each side, two winged, and surrounded by a decorative border.
