Description
IMPORTANT GEORGE III ENGLISH STERLING SILVER WINE EWER; HAND WROUGHT IN CLASSIC RAISED URN, NEO-CLASSICAL DESIGN; BEADED DECORATION; RAISED BEADED URN FINIAL; STRING OF BEAD & RAFFIA S-SCROLL HANDLE; PERIOD CREST; JOHN DENZILOE, LONDON, 1781; 29 OUNCES This is a beautifully designed and masterfully hand crafted, George III English sterling silver wine ewer. In the eagerly sought Neo-classical form. From the well regarded London silversmith John Denziloe. Date marked 1781. Denziloe apprenticed under Charles Wright in 1765. First listed in 1774. Continued working into the early 19th century. Examples of his work grace important private and institutional collections world wide. A superb Denziloe 1781 tea caddy, the same year as our wine ewer, is displayed at the famed Clark Art Institute. The largest collection of period English silver outside of the U.K. This George III ewer beautifully hand crafted in classic raised urn design. Elegant, understated lines. A perfect example of the Neo-classical form. Classic beaded decoration throughout. Including shoulder, upper rim, stem and base. Well hinged cover. Shaped perfectly to the gently sloping upper rim. The cover topped with classic raised urn finial. The urn actually an identical, miniature form of the ewer itself ! Handsome string of bead centre S-scroll handle. Rolled and split at lower end. Handle centre retains the original raffia cover, to dissipate heat transfer. The ewer supported upon thick, stepped circular base, beaded edge. Elegant period crest, depicting standing dragon, claws outstretched on one foot. This fine 1781 ewer is 12 1/2 inches tall and 6 3/4 inches handle to spout. Exceptionally thick, heavy guage sterling construction, weighs 29 ounces. In excellent condition. Appears little, if ever used. Rich, lustreous sterling patina throughout. Stands perfectly firm on table or serving tray. Retains original well wrapped raffia covering to handle. Crisp, well struck hallmarks to underside. Including Denziloe's unique wavy Gothic "ID" mark. The identical mark to plate 1255 Grimwade. And lion passant under cover. For the discerning collector of the finest English George III sterling. A superb, 1781 Neo-classical form wine ewer. From the rarely observed London silversmith John Denziloe. With period, standing dragon crest. In excellent condition. Please feel free to inquire directly about this, or any item we've listed.
