Description
Exceptional 1951 Original M-38 Military Radio Jeep 1951 M-38 Original Radio Corps Jeep, Feb. 1951- Serial #MCT0641 - 24 volt system. Finest Of The Fine. This is no doubt possibly the best of the best. An original example that never left the USA used for base training purposes then placed in a private military collection for over 30 years. It is a Holy Grail. It has been used as a resource example by those restoring, building or researching M-38’s. It was the acquired by an individual in Maine who exhibited the Jeep at shows, during parades and other celebrations. I acquired the Jeep in 2005. My 88 year old father was in the service. I purchased what I considered then to be and do now the finest original example I could find. My father took a drive in the Jeep. It was a special occasion, never to be forgotten. I have continued the tradition of displaying the Jeep on good weather days. Wanting to spare nothing to be sure that the Jeep was in excellent running condition I had my expert mechanic at New England Motor Works, Warren, Maine completely rebuild its original engine, transmission , final drive and differential. Document invoices of over $7500.00 will accompany the Jeep. Once completed, I have placed over 4,000 miles on the Jeep since engine-drivetrain overhaul often using it as a daily driver to and from the Owls Head Transportation Museum where I have been the Executive Director for the past 32 years. I have decided that it is time to find an appropriate home for this outstanding example along with a British ferret (tank) Scout Car and other vehicles that I privately own. The jeep is complete with its working radio, extra radio cased tube set, canvas top, side curtains, center post machine gun mount and many accessories included brush guard, radio back-pack, manuals including original 1951 radio manual. Note: The M-I shown in the photo will not be sold through eBay with the Jeep due to their policy of no firearms. The successful bidder will be given the gun at no charge with the exception of applicable FFL transfer charge for shipping to your FFL licensed dealer. The photographs will provide evidence of the Jeeps incredible condition. They will not attest to its ride that is second to none from steering to being able to cruise at 45-50mph. The underside of the jeep is as clean as the top-side, engine etc. . If I were to keep the Jeep I would repair four snaps on the canvas and possibly upgrade to a more efficient braking system. Its like new proper tires are in fine condition. Its original front hubs have been replaced with Warn quick change design (originals are still present). Some snaps require replacing in canvas The Jeep's matching serial numbers : MCT 0641 If you desire to have one of the finest original examples to be found this is it. If you are seeking a project or do not mind if the Jeep has been “built from components” this is NOT the one for you. We are always available for questions. We will be listing the Ferret (tank) Scout Car I the near future and it may also be viewed by visiting Techantiques.com and entering our collection gallery. You will also find many additional photos of the M-38 jeep there. The M-38 no doubt is the most sought after Military example having only been built from 1950-1952 with a low production of 45,500 . The Radio Jeeps are even more desirable. This is a rare eBay opportunity. I have not seen a better example of the most desirable of all flat fender Jeeps on eBay or in fact anywhere. Good luck bidding whether the successful bidder or not. What a great way to celebrate the Fourth of July. An example the will always be the best of the best and appreciate as you appreciate it. “The M38 Jeep was the first post-WW II jeep, based on the civilian model CJ-3A, but upgraded for military use. It was known by Willys as the model MC. It featured flat fenders, a one-piece windshield, bottom-mounted wipers, a fuel filler on the left side near the driver's seat, protruding headlights, and an air vent at the bottom center of the windshield frame. The 80-inch wheelbase M38 weighed 2,750 pounds. When compared to the World War II examples the M38 is a little larger, with better seating for the driver and passenger, and uses larger tires (7:00x16). It shares a 24 volt waterproofed electrical system with other post-war M-series vehicles, requiring a second battery to boost the voltage. The L-head, 4 cyl. 60 hp. engine of the MB was improved with a gear drive camshaft and was mated to a T90 transmission and 5:38 axle gears. Willys produced about 45,500 of the M-38 jeeps from September 1950 through July 1952.” (reference: Olive-Drab) PHOTOS: Please be patient for the following extensive photo gallery. Note: many of these photos were just taken today after a 150 mile trip and the Jeep shows road dirt that has since been cleaned. I hate to part with this special friend though other priorities are knocking at the door. I only hope that the new owner has even a small degree of the satisfaction that I have had and given others through the ownership, operation and exhibition of this first prize icon of America.
