Borneoartifact item number: PK0127One and only 1961 pua kumbu woven by lady Dayang.Height: 261cm / 102.8 inchesWidth: 155cm / 61 inches Pua kumbu of Borneo: The Pua weaving or the Pua Kumbu is a ritual blanket used for religious ceremonies, festivals “Gawai”, ceremonies associated with birth, death, healing or “soul-searching” and war of headhunting. It serves as a means of communication between this world and the world of ancestors, spirits and gods.  Here, the weaver puts down a woven graphic design of the Iban animistic beliefs, the spiritual realm (“antu”) and the world view of life around them ie. the trees, animals, insects, jungle life, natural and supernatural life. Each weaver never draws up the image she intended to dye. The designs are vested with meaning and energy. The more powerful a design, the closer it brings an Iban to the spiritual world. The more powerful the design, the greater the danger for the weaver.  The Weaver-Chemist: All the dyes used in the traditional Pua Kumbu are vegetable and fruit(mango stein-reddish color) origin, and the method of preparing the “mordant bath” for the cotton yarn and the actual dye-bath are only carried out by the special divinely-ordained weavers accorded the status of “Indu Tau Nakar Tau Ngar” or “She Who Knows the  Secret of Measuring Out the Drugs in Order to Obtain the rich colors. This pua: This is the only pua I can guarentee, woven in 1961 and signature by name of the actual person, lady Dayang. During this period, Sarawak was still fighting for independences and eventually succeeded year 1963 and joint Malaya as a member state.  The massive pua is decorated with four rows of  unique "Bujang Berani" or "Brave Warriors" with the highest hierarchy of warrior at center of pua. Note another two rows of fallen fighters which represented the British occupation then. Background is decorated with motifs of "Empetut snake" and "Buah Berinjan" / creeper. Top Selakoh:  Plain. Bottom Selakoh:  Plain.Ara / side border:  "Signature" of the artist herself, "MADE BY DAYANG 1961". Only natural dye from vegetable or fruit are used. Please don't ever have any contact with water, as this will permanently destroy the colors. Origin: Sarawak, Borneo.   Age:  The pua is 47 years old. Condition:  Despite the old age, the pua is in good shape, some aging on the colors but each detail remains clear.
