This Type of device was used to squeeze air into the patient's chest cavity thus compressing the lung and putting it in a rest like state. This rest State would help to heal the Lung during its recovery from Consumption. I have not seen one that is an earlier version of this device then this one. The Sierra Sacramento Valley Museum of Medical History has a Beauty on Display in Case # 8. I am guessing by the style and craftsmanship theirs is the 30s-40s and this is 20s-30s maby both a litt earlier. It has a brass plaque on its base that reads Appareil A Pneumothorax Artificill DU Dr Kuss Etablissements Leune Constructeurs Ste Anonyme au Capital de 5.000.000.Frs. 28 BIS Rue du Cardinal Lemoine, PARIS V. The Height is 19" tall and 9 1/2" wide without the elevator. The Elevator and the woven cotton belt work superbly. The aspirator Bottle with the Red Stopper Fits securely in place on the elevator and on the securing dock at the back of the machine. As far as I can tell this Baby is complete other then some of the rubber hose that has deteriorated and fallen off. The large rubber hose is 95% supple and the other 5% spot is drying. The aspirator bottle with the black stopper that is in the Elevator in some photos is made in West Germany by Corning, I don't think that that bottle is original to this piece but I will include it anyway along with three lengths of the same period rubber hose. I was told this is very similar to a Wangsteen Apparetus and that it is hooked up wrong, Quite Possible. What I do Know for sure is its French and its called Apparell or Apparatus, Pneum or Breathing, Thorax or Lung Cavity and Artificiel or Artificial.
