This is an impressively scaled antique french piece of art glass, created using a complicated and time consuming process. This process begins when a ball of molten glass is blown into whatever size and shape is needed, the pontil is broken off and the piece placed in a kiln to slowly cool the glass. After the piece has cooled thoroughly and the pontil has been ground smooth, an artist can begin painting the desired image using specially formulated waxes, after which acids of different strengths are repeatedly applied to the piece, cutting into its surface and etching the design to the desired depths. To enhance the beauty of the piece even further, layer upon layer of specially formulated colored enamels are applied to the glass, the glass fired after each layer; until finally the desired effect has been achieved and the piece is finished. Depending on the size and complexity of its design, number of colors, etc., a single piece can take several days to complete. This vase is done in a flattened ovoid shape and covered with a continuous landscape scene, featuring a grove of tall slender trees surrounding and reflecting in a lake, done in various shades of brown, green, orange, gold, yellow-orange and pink. Measurements are: 20 5/16 inches (tall) by 6 inches (at its widest).Excellent Condition with only the slightest of scratches to the bottom resting ring, it has a polished pontil and is properly signed; Legras.
