Description
I'm launching a series of digital "reprints" on CD of various old musical instruments trade catalogs and other antique music related books and prints and new items similar to this are added to my eBay store all the time. And don't hesitate to ask me if you can't find what you're looking for. There are hundreds of other titles in peparation. Please note that the item in this and my other ebook auctions are reproductions, not originals. For sale here is a CD with a facsimile edition of one of the most spectacular ctalogs I've ever seen, Barnett Samuel & Sons' 1911 "Price List." This book has everything! And much of it with full colour illustrations too!PreviewsHere are a few scaled down samples from the ebook. (You can click on the images to view slightly larger versions.) Please note that the large images above are still much smaller than the ones on the CD. You can click here for a full size scan of one of the pages if you want to see the quality available from the CD.DescriptionKey dataTitle:Revised price listPublisher:Barnett Samuel & SonsCountry:EnglandArea:LondonDate:1911Language:EnglishCD edition:No. of scans:297Resolution:180 dpiEbook size:429 MBOrder code:Samuel1911Physical description of the originalThe size is 28.1 cm height and 22.8 cm width. The total number of pages in the catalog is aproximately 400. This includes the hard cover, title page, introduction and index, 177 numbered pages listing products with prices and specifications, more than 50 colour and more than 40 black-and-white plates (printed on one side only) and some other misc. pages at the beginning and the end.The print of the black-and-white plates are actually colour-tinted (sometimes brown, sometimes dark green) and the back of all illustrations (colour as well as black-and-white) are printed in ligth green with the same Barnett Samuel logo pattern. All pages (except of course for the hard cover) seems to have been made of the same heavy weaight semigloss/matte paper.DatingThe preface to the catalog is dated January 1911.ContentThis catalog is so complete it's easier to list what's not there: there are no organs (neither church organs nor harmoniums) and there are no pianos (although there are two piano advertisement pages towards the end).Apart from that: if it has anything to do with music and it was available at all on the English amrket in 1911, it's probably listed and pictured in this book.Ebook conditionThis is one catalog I would have loved to present a spotless republication of but that's not possible of course. Scans of hardcover books will always show some "bending" of the scans towards the spine and the problem is especially serious with a book as huge as this one. This inevitably means that some of the illustration have become distorted. Also, the original to the ebook has seen some heavy usage and isn't even a hundred percent complete. It used to belong to a Royal Navy bandmaster (who may have doubled as a travelling sales agent for Barnett Samuel) and the years at sea has caused the pages to buckle, making it impossible to place them completely flush against the scanner bed. At some time a few illustrations have been cut out of the book as well: two cornet pictures have been cut from the brass instrument plates and an entire plate with pictures of signal trumpets/horns have been removed. However, even in its somewhat reduced state, this catalog is so magnificent I just had to include it in the Musica Viva ebook series and its wealth of information and wonderful illustration makes it mandatory to anybody interested in pre ww i English musical instruments.FormatThe CD presents the catalog in a choice of three different formats: high resolution (180 dpi) JPEG scans for maximum quality, HTML format allowing you to leaf through the scans as if it was a paper book and PDF format for quick reference with all pages in a single document. It is readable on any reasonably modern computer with a CD drive.Other ebooksDon't forget to visit my eBay store regularly! There is already a large selection of similar items for sale there and new ones are added all the time!
