Click picture to see actual image size. Rare Ancient Greek Red-Figure PotteryKylix ~ Wine Cup Ancient Greek ~ Magna GraeciaPaestum, S. Italy, Mid-4th Century BC Red-Figure Kylix. This large size signature shape cup is characterized by its raised footed base and rounded body. The elegant cup is punctuated by two delicate and graceful opposing horizontal handles which are angled everted vertically at the recurved ends. ~ . ~ . ~ . ~ . ~The Tondo--central design of the cup interior--features a figure and target-type design with the characteristic palmette and scroll design of the Paestum School at center with a broad circular border framing device. Black glaze/slip covers the reds of the cup except for the underside. Interestingly, the reserved underside features a border of fine incised dashes and concentric circles with the incised design accented with darker red pigment. ~ . ~ . ~ . ~ . ~Because the primary use for the kylix was at a symposium - a "drinking party", or symposion in Greek. The almost flat interior circle on the interior base of the cup, called the tondo, was the primary surface for painted decoration in Red-figure styles of the 6th-4th century BC.As the representations would be covered with wine, the scenes would only be revealed in stages as the wine was drained. The shape of the kylix enabled the drinker to drink whilst recumbent, as was the case in the symposia. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Condition: Excellent; no repair; handles intact, little surface mineralization; only a few chips to rim.
