Description
TONELLA THAI USAANTIQUE ASIAN ART A Khmer Divinity Figure of 'Vishnu', Late Bayon Style, 13th Century Description: When a God takes on physical form and appears on earth, the manifestation is an Avatar- meaning 'descent'. No god has descended to earth more than Vishnu, the great protector of all existence. He appears during times of great moral and spiritual crisis, to right wrong. We are pleased to present this fine and rather large 13th century Bayon Khmer period bronze of 'Vishnu', that measuring 13.5 inches or 34.29cm. in height (without stand). The figure is portrayed standing in a strong frontal posture on a square plinth, wearing a surmounted headdress above an arched interconnected 'diadem' crown. The face with indigenous characteristics, has precise and well executed features. The open almond-shaped eyes with their engraved pupils are outlined with double contour eyelids. The sensuous smiling mouth and the chin are subtly defined. The arched eyebrows are rendered by a continous curved line above a prominents nose. The earlobes are elongated with long khmer style pendants, falling to his shoulders. The hair is arranged in tightly matted braids, delineated by incised lines, drawn upwards into a tall topknot, decorated with a coiled image of 'Naga' in relief, rising to a dome-shape finial. The figure has four-arms, each holding attributes, which are the chakra and conch in the upper hands, and what appears to be a groud dipped in one lower hand and the remains of a 'Utpala', a blue lotus in the other. Vishnu's broad and well defined shoulders support a lovely jeweled necklace, embellished with small hanging pendants and a centralized rosette. He wears a complex sampot encircling his mid figure, with a large front flap folding over an ornate belt, and another wide fish-tail flap hanging down below the garment. He is adorned with armlets, bracelets, anklets and ornaments. Cast in the lost wax method, the surface of the bronze is complemented by a naturally aged dry patina, with various areas of cuprites and overlaying green malachite oxidation. This skillfully executed image of Vishnu is a stylistic example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of this divine deity in human form, with lively imagination and conviction. Data Observation: Common with unearthed artifacts, this multi-armed figure had two broken arms and was professional reconstructed at the lower right arm, and a prosthetic replacement to the upper left arm. Conditions in which these ancient artifacts are found add character and beauty to each individual piece, without visually depreciation.
