Description
TONELLA THAI USAANTIQUE ASIAN ART Late Chiengsaen Seated Buddha, Sukhothai Influence, Late 14th to Early 15th Century Description: This particular bronze image of a meditating Buddha is referred to as late 'Chiengsaen' type. A cultural period in Lanna Art which received a significant amount of influence from Pala and Sukhothai Art. Lanna artist blended these influences into a individualized level of artistry, creating a distinct style of sculpture. The Image: We are pleased to present this beautiful meditating Buddha from the northern region of Thailand, dating to the Late Chiengsaen period, 14th to early 15th centuries. The image displays a significant amount of influence from the Sukhothai style of Art, with some minor characteristics of early Pala Indian Art. The figure is portrayed in the seated position or 'Virasana' posture, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The left hand resting palm open on the lap and the right hand forming the 'Bhumisparsa' mudra, or Calling the Earth to Witness', gesture. The image features a thick, very solid body with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. The robe is worn diagonally and covers the left shoulder, with the end fold of the robe extended down to the navel. The torso when viewed from the side is exactly perpendicular to the ground and the right arm is slightly separated from the side of the body. The most noteworthy feature on late Chiengsaen images of this type, have eyes whose whites are inlaid with mother of pearl and the pupils are inlaid with glass (a convention seen by some to suggest Burmese influence). The second most distinguishing feature are the very large hair curls whorled to the right. Late Chiengsaen images of this period became more influenced by Sukhothai style of Art. They developed a more oval face with the eyes prominent. The face is marked by delicately molded and separated eyebrows, the mouth is small with somewhat thickened lips, and the nose is well shaped with flared wing like nostrils. The rounded chin is emphasized by a curved incised line (an early Chiengsaen characteristic). The head is surmounted by a hemispherical 'ushnisha' and crowned with a pointed flame-shaped halo. The buddha image is seated on a simplistic base slightly elevated from the Earth. There is some minor material loss behind the left hand, caused by a casting flaw (short pour), but does not detract from the overall beauty of the piece. The image was lost wax casted in bronze, with a noticeable high level of copper alloy mixture. The surface has aged to a smooth lustrous chocolate brown patina, covered with traces of blackened lacquer and remaining deposits of gold gilding. Reddish coppertone areas of the metal are visible where the gilding has either been scraped off during the traditional Thai New Year buddha clearing (celebrated once a year) or peeled away naturally from time. The core within the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, revealing cross- hatch patterns of blackened rice husk. This meditating image is a fantastic example of the subline craftsmanship and artistic attainment achieved during the late Chiengsaen period. Data Observation: The image is in excellent condition, with the exception of a minor casting flaw behind the left hand. Does not detract from the over all beauty of the piece. Please view detailed photos for overall quality and minor imperfections of the item. Estimate Value: $90,000.00 to $125,000.00 (USD). Dimensions: Height: 28.50 inches (72.39cm).
