Description
Exceptionally rare example of this important early icon of mid century modern design. I have owned this piece for over 5 years and have never seen another like it. Most Controlight floor lamps utilize either a round or triangular walnut floor base. As you can see, this frame is constructed entirely from shaped, rounded black powder coat metal. Designed by Mitchell Bobrick in 1949, these designs were on the bleeding edge of what would become known as Mid Century Modernism. Several Controlight lamps were selected in 1953 for use in the noted Kramer House designed by Richard Neutra in Los Angeles. This wonderful piece measures 65" tall with reflector in vertical position. The frame measures 54" tall by itself and tapers from 11.5" at the base to 1.5" at the top. The soft-fiberglass reflector measures approx 23.5" in diameter and swivels both horizontally and vertically. The amazing dusty rose colored ceramic diffusion cone measures 11" tall and tapers from 3.25" to 6.25". Original Controlight lable is intact. Terrific intended surface crazing pattern. All parts and hardware are original. The brown electric cord was installed as a replacement many years ago and should probably be changed, if only for aesthetic reasons. The lamp works great! I've used a 75 watt bulb but could probably utilize a 100 watt as well. Condition: I purchased this from the elder son of the original owners who were both studio artists. It had been used as a practical lamp nearly everyday of it's existence since it was originally purchased circa 1950 in Los Angeles. As such, it does show some signs of wear - mostly to the black frame. Specifically there are numerous surface (powder coat) scuffs and scratches especially to base. NO DINGS, DENTS FLAWS or REPAIRS HOWEVER. This could easily be powder coated with minimal effort/expense and look 100% new. The fiberglass has 3-4 small (quarter-sized) soil marks otherwise excellent. It has held it's shape remarkably well with only a few stray fibers. I've been told that spray starch could be applied to cure any flyaways but it looks terrific as-is in my opinion. The ceramic cone has one very small glaze chip along top lip and a larger one along the bottom that you cannot see unless you disassemble. A small glaze skip (1/16") from factory along bottom lip - again cannot see. NO other CHIPS, CRACKS REPAIRS etc! Please refer to the Photobucket Pics below for above details as eBay limits their on-site photo pack to 12 pictures. My Buy It Now price is based on rarity, condition and similarity to the only like design I've found which is here: http://www.artnet.com/artist/424956148/mitchell-bobrick.html This table lamp was offered at the October 14th, 2007, LA Modern Auction where it drew a high bid of $6,600. Most Controlight floor lamps fetch $2000 - $3000 but feature a plain walnut base - not the Grossman-like grasshopper base seen here. Please bid responsibly. Non payment will result in eBay notification of non-payment. Cool pictured 1959 Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman currently listed at auction on EBAY! SHIPPING: Due to size and construction, this will need to be shipped in 3 boxes: the cone (1) diffuser (with hooped bar) (2) and base/stand configuration (3). AS SUCH I PREFER LOCAL PICK UP however I will ship anywhere in the world IF THE BIDDER AGREES TO ARRANGE ALL SHIPPING INCLUDING PACKAGING - I cannot package this unit. I will provide reasonable assistance in coordinating pick up. I can drop off at UPS or Fed Ex stores for no additional charge. I also highly recommend using Freighters and Craters in Seattle. They do high quality work and specialize in large and unusual items. Please, International bidders must contact me first to confirm shipping and payment method. There will be no handling fees added. TERMS: Sorry NO PAYPAL. I accept payment by US check (held until clears), money order or direct bank transfer. Payment required within 10 days. 100% guaranteed original and authentic.
