Complete Book !!   Thangka is a tibetan term identifying buddhist paintings.Characterised by precise measuremenst of anatomical propotion the incorporation of symbolism from relious parables, and artistic amplification.This type of artwork spread troughout Mongolia beginning in the 18th century, reaching the peak of its development in the early 19th century.Paintings on a red background are called 'Martan', on a white background 'Gartan', while paintings on a black background are called 'Nagtan', there is also a style involving simple line drawing on a solid background.   Mongolian Buddhist thangka paintings are painted on cotton cloth, more rarely on silk, colours are traditionally made from minerals as well as vegetable dyes. Before application they are de-saturated in varying degrees in lime and mixed with boiled gum. These stone colours maintain their intensity so well that many old thangkas still retain striking colours. Itinerant lamas used them as icons of personal devotion and to sanctify tents in which they held teachings of Buddhist doctrine.
