Description
Offered here is an astounding magnificent monumental sterling silver gilded covered cup, fully hallmarked for London 1935. This is a truly remarkable and massive piece of Art Deco silver made by one of the very famous and important makers, Edward Barnard. The piece is also in absolutely mint pristine condition as the day it was made. The size / proportions of this piece are also incredible, standing over 22 inches / 560 mm high and measuring some 14 inches / 355 mm across the handles. It is also incredibly heavy weighing a massive 3,633 grams / 113 troy ounces. The spendour of this piece is impossible to portray well in the photographs, party due to it's size and superb gilded finish which causes reflection from the lights. The design is superb with the two magnificent large handles and the building-like columns rising from the top of the base around the body of the cup and coming down from the centre of the lid in classic Art Deco style. The lid itself has a wonderfully chased finial standing upon an octagonal 'plinth'. The lid alone weighs 650 grams. As stated above, the scale of this cup is remarkable. It measures over 22 inches / 560 mm high and 14 inches / 355 wide across the handles. The diametre of the bowl at the rim is 8 inches / 203 mm. Both the body of the cup and the lid bear a full set of clear / crisp hallmarks - London mark, lion passant, letter U for 1935, maker's mark EB for Edward Barmard. Both the lid and the body of the cup also bear the Silver Jubilee hallmark. The cup is in pristine / absolutely mint condition with the original gilding and it is free from dents, damage or repair. The cup has never been engraved. This is a very rare and large piece of English Art Deco silver made by one of it's most important makers.
