(Dealing in antique jewelry and antiques for over 50 years). Painted by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta---Spanish artist---1841-1920. Apparently a gift from William Vanderbilt to Samuel P. Avery and painted by Madrazo in 1879. An art enthusiast, Willam Vanderbilt gave the painting to Samuel P. Avery, a founding member and lifelong trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Mr. Avery was a successful art dealer in New York in the late nineteenth century who promoted art by Madrazo. As best interpreted with signature: Souvenir du tableau de Mr. W. Vanderbilt-(Tapisserie que figure au fond) a Mr. Samuel P. Avery. Madrazo-1879. Canvass measures 17 1/2 by 21 inches. Reinforced in original frame----26 by 30 inches. Two small patches on reverse as pictured--canvass has Paris provenance.
