Description
SquareTrade © AP6.0  Britannia Depicta or Ogilby Improv'd ; Being a Correct Copy of Mr Ogilby's Actual Survey of All Ye Direct and Principal Cross Roads of England and Wales - 1st Edition of 1720 in Two Volumes - Owen (John) and Emanuel Bowen Thomas Bowles and Emanuel Bowen, London, 1720. 1st edition. 8vo. Bound in full contemporary speckled and panelled tan calf. Raised bands to spine. Corners a trifle bruised. Very superficial cracking to joints but overall a remarkably original and tidy copy. Bookplate stating 'Milton, Peterborough' to front pastedown.  (6), 273 pages of maps. Collates complete. Some of the earlier pages are a little closed cropped to the fore margin, resulting in the loss of the '1' to the corner of map 10, but whilst impinging inside the platemark it does not affect the marginal notes. Internally very sound and tidy, externally with a bit of minor wear. Very original and tidy first edition of this classic work of English cartography with all 273 road maps engraved by Emanuel Bowen. Emanuel Bowen was a print and map seller by trade, he was also engraver to both George II and Louis XV of France. From 1714 onwards he worked in London and began to produce some of the finest and most appealing maps of that era. Along with various maps and Atlases, Bowen produced this popular book of road maps, very much in keeping with those of Ogilby, although much like the maps his 'The Large English Atlas', Bowen embellished them with historical detail and heraldic images which set them apart from others as his own work. His son, Thomas, also produced some beautiful maps, having started helping his father when he was young, he continued by himself long after Emanuel's death.                     ONE OF SEVERAL RARE AND ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS WE HAVE FOR SALE TODAY.
